Welcome

Passing of the Peace: Though we are separated by distance our hearts are one in Christ. The peace of Christ be with you!  And also with you!

Call to worship:   Psalm 135

Praise the name of the Lord praise Him, O servants of the Lord,

you who stand in the house of the Lord, in the courts of the house of our God!

Leader:    Whatever the Lord pleases, He does in heaven and on earth,

in the seas and all the depths.

He makes lightning for the rain; He brings the wind out from His storehouses.

Leader:     The idols of the nations are silver and gold, the work of men’s hands.

People:      They have mouths, but do not speak;  they have eyes, but do not see;

Leader:     they have ears, but do not hear; neither is there any breath in their mouths.

Songs of Praise:

Great Are You, Lord (Steve & Vikki Cook, CCLI #26863)

Holy Lord, most holy Lord, you alone are worthy of my praise,

O holy Lord, most holy Lord, with all of my heart I sing:

Chorus:

Great are you, Lord, worthy of praise!

Holy and true, great are you, Lord, most holy Lord.

Holy Lord, most holy Lord, you alone are worthy of my praise,

O holy Lord, most holy Lord, with all of my heart I sing:

Chorus:

Great are you, Lord, worthy of praise!

Holy and true, great are you, Lord, most holy Lord. (2X).

God of Wonders (Marc Byrd & Steve Hindalong, 2000  CCLI #3118757)

Lord of all creation, of water, earth and sky,

The heavens are your tabernacle; glory to the Lord on high.

Chorus:

God of wonders beyond our galaxy, you are holy, holy.

The universe declares your majesty, you are holy, holy…

Lord of heaven and earth, Lord of heaven and earth,

Hallelujah to the Lord of heaven and earth,

Hallelujah to the Lord of heaven and earth,

Hallelujah to the Lord of heaven and earth!

Early in the morning, I will celebrate the light,

And as II stumble in the darkness, I will call your name by night. (Chorus)

Jesus, Thou Joy of Loving Hearts (Bernard of Clairvaux, ca. 1150; tune Henry Baker, 1854)

Jesus, thou joy of loving hearts, thou fount of life, thou light of men.

From the best bliss that earth imparts we turn unfilled to thee again.

Thy truth unchanged hath ever stood; thou savest those that on thee call;

to them that seek thee thou art good, to them that find thee all in all.

We taste thee, O thou living bread, and long to feast upon thee still;

we drink of thee, the fountainhead; dry, thirsty souls in thee are filled.

Our restless spirits yearn for thee, where e’er our changeful lot is cast;

Glad when thy gracious smile we see, blessed when our faith can hold thee fast.

Jesus, thou joy of loving hearts, thou fount of life, thou light of men.

From the best bliss that earth imparts we turn unfilled to thee again.

Confession/Assurance

Respond in Praise:

There is A Redeemer (Melody Green, 1982  CCLI #11483)

There is a Redeemer, Jesus, God’s own Son.

Precious Lamb of God, Messiah, Holy One.

Chorus:

Thank you, O my Father, for giving us your Son,

And leaving your Spirit till the work on earth is done.

Jesus, my Redeemer, name above all names,

Precious Lamb of God, Messiah, Oh, for sinners slain. (Chorus)

When I stand in glory, I will see his face,

And there I’ll serve my King forever in that holy place. (Chorus)

Scripture Reading:    Matthew 6:16-24

Fasting

16 “And when you fast, do not look gloomy like the hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces that their fasting may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. 17 But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, 18 that your fasting may not be seen by others but by your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

Lay Up Treasures in Heaven

19 “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust[a] destroy and where thieves break in and steal, 20 but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

22 “The eye is the lamp of the body. So, if your eye is healthy, your whole body will be full of light, 23 but if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light in you is darkness, how great is the darkness!

24 “No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money.

This is the Word of the Lord.   Thanks be to God!

Sermon:  ” You Gotta Serve Somebody

Hymn of Dedication:

Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus (Helen Lemmel, 1922 CCLI #15960)

O soul, are you weary and troubled?

No light in the darkness you see?

There’s light for a look at the Savior,

and life more abundant and free!

Chorus:

Turn your eyes upon Jesus,

look full in his wonderful face;

And the things of earth will grow strangely dim

in the light of his glory and grace.

His Word shall not fail you—he promised;

Believe him and all will be well:

Then go to a world that is dying,

Lord’s Prayer:

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.

Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors.

Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil:

for thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory.  Amen

Hymn of Thanksgiving:

Jesus, Priceless Treasure (Renee Allsbrook)

Jesus, priceless treasure, source of purest pleasure, truest friend to me:

Lord, how long in anguish shall my spirit languish, yearning, after thee?

Yours I am, O spotless Lamb!  Quietly I wait alone for thee;

Nothing ask beside thee, nothing ask beside Thee.

In your arms I rest me; foes who would possess me cannot reach me here.

Though the earth be shaking, every heart be quaking, Jesus calms my fear.

Lightnings flash and thunders crash; yet, though sin and hell assail me,

Jesus will not fail me, Jesus will not fail me.

Satan, I defy you; death, I now decry you; fear, I bid you cease.

World, you shall not harm me, nor your threats alarm me while I sing of peace.

God’s great power guards every hour; earth and all its depths adore him,

Silent bow before him, silent bow before him.

Go, then, earthly treasure! Christ is all my pleasure, Jesus, all my choice.

Go, you empty glory!  Empty is your story, told with tempting voice.

Pain or loss or shame or cross shall not from my Savior move me,

Since he chose to love me, since he chose to love me.

Leave me, fear and sadness, for the Lord of gladness—Jesus—enters in.

Those who love the Father, though the storms may gather, still have peace within.

Yes, whate’er we here must bear, you are still my purest pleasure,

Jesus, priceless treasure, Jesus, priceless treasure.

Benediction
