PROVIDENCE CHURCH

May 9, 2021

Welcome

Passing of the Peace: Though we are separated by distance our hearts are one in Christ. The peace of Christ be with you!  And also with you!

Call to worship:   Psalm 8

Leader:  O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!

You have set your glory above the heavens.

People:  Out of the mouth of babies and infants, you have established strength because of your foes, to still the enemy and the avenger.

Leader:  When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what is man that you are mindful of him, and the son of man that you care for him?

People: Yet you have made him a little lower than the heavenly beings.

and crowned him with glory and honor.

Leader:  You have given him dominion over the works of your hands; you have put all things under his feet,

People:  all sheep and oxen, and also the beasts of the field, the birds of the heavens, and the fish of the sea, whatever passes along the paths of the seas.

ALL:  O Lord, our Lord,   how majestic is your name in all the earth!

Songs of Praise:

Joyful, Joyful We Adore Thee (Henry Van Dyke, 1907; tune Beethoven, 1824)

Joyful, joyful, we adore thee, God of glory, Lord of love;

Hearts unfold like flow’rs before thee, Opening to the sun above.

Melt the clouds of sin and sadness; drive the dark of doubt away;

Giver of immortal gladness, fill us with the light of day!

All thy works with joy surround thee, Earth and heav’n reflect thy rays,

Stars and angels sing around thee, Center of unbroken praise.

Field and forest, vale and mountain, flowery meadow, flashing sea,

Chanting bird and flowing fountain call us to rejoice in thee.

Thou art giving and forgiving, ever blessing, ever blest,

Well-spring of the joy of living, ocean-depth of happy rest!

Thou our Father, Christ our Brother—all who live in love are thine;

Teach us how to love each other, lift us to the joy divine.

Mortals, join the mighty chorus which the morning stars began;

Father love is reigning o’er us, brother love binds man to man.

Ever singing, march we onward, victors in the midst of strife;

Joyful music leads us sun-ward in the triumph song of life.

Come and Rejoice (Don Moen, Gerrit Gustafson  CCLI #190490)

Come with rejoicing, the Father is calling

those who would worship in Spirit and truth.

Come with your singing, come with thanksgiving;

Jesus our Savior has made all things new.

Chorus:

Come and rejoice, O holy nation; come and sing praises to Him.

Come and bow down, worship before Him,

Jesus the King of all kings, Jesus the King of all kings.

The Lord of Creation is full of compassion,

seated in splendor, adorned with all grace,

Majestic and glorious, reigning victorious,

now and forever enthroned on our praise. (Chorus)

With the sound of the trumpet He summons the nations,

calling a priesthood to go in His name;

To show forth His power to this generations,

to worship before Him, a kingdom of praise. (Chorus)

Awake My Soul (A Thousand Tongues)

(Jonas Myrin, Laura Story, Matt Redman, Matt Maher  CCLI #7053752)

O for a thousand tongues to sing my great Redeemer’s praise,

The glories of my God and King, the triumphs of his grace.

A thousand songs are not enough to say how great You are:

The glories of your Majesty, the triumphs of your love.

Chorus:

Awake my soul, to sing the glories of my God and King!

Arise and praise the One worthy of the songs of a thousand tongues.

Your name, Lord Jesus, casts out fear, and bids our sorrows cease;

It’s music in the sinner’s ear, it’s life, and health and peace.

You break the power of all our sin, You set the captive free,

You make the broken heart rejoice; new life the dead receive. (Chorus)

Forever you are…

Forever you are worthy.

Forever you are…

Forever you are worthy.

Forever you are…

Forever you are worthy.

Forever you are…

Chorus:

Awake my soul, to sing the glories of my God and King!

Arise and praise the One worthy of the songs of a thousand tongues (Repeat)

Tag:  You are worthy of the songs of a thousand tongues.

Confession/Assurance

Respond in Praise:

We Believe (Graham Kendrick, 1986  CCLI #190689)

We believe in God the Father, maker of the universe,

And in Christ the Son, our Savior, come to us by virgin birth.

We believe He died to save us, bore our sins, was crucified;

Then, from death, He rose victorious, ascended to the Father’s side—

Jesus, Lord of all, Lord of all,

Jesus, Lord of all, Lord all;

Jesus, Lord of all, Lord of all,

Jesus, Lord of all, Lord of all—

We believe He sends his Spirit on his Church with gifts of pow’r,

God, his Word of truth affirming, sends us to the nations now.

He will come again in glory, judge the living and the dead;

Ev’ry knee shall bow before Him, then must ev’ry tongue confess:

Jesus, Lord of all, Lord of all,

Jesus, Lord of all, Lord all;

Jesus, Lord of all, Lord of all,

Jesus, Lord of all, Lord of all—Lord of all.

Scripture Reading:    Matthew 7:13-20

13 “Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy[a] that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. 14 For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few.

A Tree and Its Fruit

15 “Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves. 16 You will recognize them by their fruits. Are grapes gathered from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? 17 So, every healthy tree bears good fruit, but the diseased tree bears bad fruit. 18 A healthy tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a diseased tree bear good fruit. 19 Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. 20 Thus you will recognize them by their fruits.

This is the Word of the Lord.   Thanks be to God!

Sermon:  “Abundant Life”

Hymn of Dedication

Breathe (Marie Barnett, 1995  CCLI #1874117)

This is the air I breathe, this is the air I breathe, Your holy presence living in me.

This is my daily bread, this is my daily bread, Your very Word spoken to me.

And I, I’m desperate for You.

And I, I’m lost without You. (Repeat all)

And I, I’m desperate for You.

And I, I’m lost without You,

I’m lost without you,

I’m lost without you.

Lord’s Prayer:

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.

Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors.

Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil:

for thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory.  Amen

Hymn of Thanksgiving:

We Come, O Christ, to You (E. Margaret Clarkson, 1957, 1985; tune John Darwall, 1770  CCLI #3680735)

We come, O Christ, to you, true Son of God and man,

by whom all things consist, in whom all life began:

In you alone we live and move, and have our being in your love.

You are the Way to God, your blood our ransom paid:

In you we face our Judge and Maker unafraid.

Before the throne absolved we stand, your love has met your law’s demand.

You are the living Truth! All wisdom dwells in you,

the Source of every skill, the one eternal True!

O great I Am! In you we rest, sure answer to our every quest.

You only are true Life, to know you is to live

the more abundant life that earth can never give:

O risen Lord! We live in you: in us each day your life renew!

We worship you, Lord Christ, our Savior and our King,

to you our youth and strength adoringly we bring:

So fill our hearts, that all may view your life in us, and turn to you.

Benediction
