PROVIDENCE CHURCH
PENTECOST SUNDAY MAY 31, 2020

Welcome

Passing of the Peace: Though we are separated by distance our hearts are one in Christ. The peace of Christ be with you!

Doxology:
Praise God from Whom all blessings flow,
Praise Him all creatures here below,
Praise Him above ye heavenly hosts,
Praise Father, Son and Holy Ghost. Amen.

Call to worship: Psalm 104 – A responsive reading
Pastor: Bless and affectionately praise the Lord, O my soul!
People: O Lord my God, You are very great; You are clothed with splendor and majesty,
Pastor: You are the One who covers Yourself with light as with a garment, who stretches out the heavens like a tent curtain,
People: Who lays the beams of His upper chambers in the waters, who makes the clouds His chariot, who walks on the wings of the wind,
Pastor: Who makes winds His messengers, flames of fire His ministers.
People: You send springs into the valleys; their waters flow among the mountains.
Pastor: You give wine which makes the heart of your people glad, so that You may make our face glisten with oil, and give bread to sustain and strengthen our heart.
People: We go out to our work and we remain in our labor until evening.
ALL: O Lord, how many and varied are Your works! In wisdom You have made them all;
the earth is full of Your riches and Your creatures.

Song of Praise: Shine, Jesus, Shine (Graham Kendrick, 1987)

Lord, the light of Your love is shining,
in the midst of the darkness shining.
Jesus, Light of the world, shine upon us;
Set us free by the truth You now bring us.
Shine on me, shine on me!

Chorus: Shine, Jesus, shine, fill this land with the Father’s glory;
Blaze, Spirit, blaze, set our hearts on fire;
Flow, river, flow, flood the nations with grace and mercy.
Send forth Your Word, Lord, and let there be light.

Lord, I come to Your awesome presence,
from the shadows into Your radiance.
By the blood I may enter Your brightness;
Search me, try me, consume all my darkness.
Shine on me, shine on me! (Chorus)

As we gaze on Your kingly brightness,
so our faces display Your likeness.
Ever changing from glory to glory,
mirrored here may our lives tell Your story.
Shine on me, shine on me! (Chorus 2x)

Confession/Assurance: If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 1 John 1:9

Respond in Praise: Spirit of the Living God (Daniel Iverson & Lowell Alexander, 1994)

Spirit of the living God, fall fresh on me;
Spirit of the living God, fall fresh on me.
Melt me, mold me, fill me, use me.
Spirit of the living God, fall fresh on me.

Holy presence, love divine, cast out my fear;
Holy presence, love divine, cast out my fear.
Shield me, free me, call me, lead me.
Holy presence, love divine, cast out my fear.

Spirit of the living God, fall fresh on me;
Spirit of the living God, fall fresh on me.
Melt me, mold me, fill me, use me.
Spirit of the living God, fall fresh on me.

Scripture Reading: Ezekiel 47
Then the angel brought me back to the door of the house, that is, the temple of the Lord; and behold, water was flowing from under the threshold of the House of God toward the east, for the front of the temple was facing east. And the water was flowing down from under, from the right side of the house, from south of the altar. And behold, water was spurting out from the south side of the gate.
And he said to me, “Son of man, have you seen this?” “These waters go out toward the eastern region and go down into the Desert, the Jordan Valley; then they go toward the sea, being made to flow into the sea, and the waters of the Dead Sea shall be healed and become fresh. Everything will live wherever the river goes. And it will come about that fishermen will stand beside it at the banks of the Dead Sea. By the river on its bank, on one side and on the other, will grow all kinds of trees for food. Their leaves will not wither and their fruit will not fail. They shall bear every month because their water flows from the sanctuary, and their fruit will be for food and their leaves for healing of the nations.”

Revelation 22:1-2
Then the angel showed me a river of the water of life, clear as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb, in the middle of its street. On either side of the river was the tree of life, bearing twelve kinds of fruit, yielding its fruit every month; and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations.

Acts 2:1-4
When the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all together in one place. And suddenly there came from heaven a sound like a mighty rushing wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. And divided tongues as of fire appeared to them and rested on each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance.

This is the Word of the Lord.

SERMON:

Prayers of the people: Pray for yourself, family and community, nation and the world.

Hymn of Thanksgiving: Holy Spirit, Living Breath of God (Keith Getty & Stuart Townend, 2005)

Holy Spirit, living breath of God,
breathe new life into my willing soul.
Breathe the presence of the risen Lord
to renew my heart and make me whole.
Cause Your Word to come alive in me;
give me faith for what I cannot see.
Give me passion for Your purity;
Holy Spirit, breathe new life in me.

Holy Spirit, come abide within,
may Your joy be seen in all I do.
Love enough to cover every sin,
in each thought and deed and attitude.
Kindness to the greatest and the least,
gentleness that sows the path of peace.
Turn my strivings into works of grace;
Breath of God show Christ in all I do.

Holy Spirit, from creation’s birth,
giving life to all that God has made,
show Your power once again on earth,
cause Your Church to hunger for your ways.
Let the fragrance of our prayers arise;
lead us on the road of sacrifice,
that in unity the face of Christ
may be clear for all the world to see.

“Now to him who is able to keep you from falling and to present you before his glorious presence without fault and with great joy—to the only God our Savior be glory, majesty, power and authority, through Jesus Christ our Lord, before all ages, now and forevermore! Amen.” (Jude 24,25)

Benediction
