PROVIDENCE CHURCH

      October 9, 2022

Welcome

Passing of the Peace: Though we are separated by distance our hearts are one in Christ. The peace of Christ be with you!  And also with you!

Special Music:       Rejoice, the Lord is King                                        Connor and Kara Ramsey

Doxology

Praise God from whom all blessings flow,

Praise him all creatures here below,

Praise him above, ye heavenly host;

Praise Father, Son and Holy Ghost.

Amen

Call to Worship:   Romans 12:1-5

Leader:  I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.

Congregation:  Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.

Leader:  For by the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think with sober judgment, each according to the measure of faith that God has assigned.

Congregation:  For as in one body we have many members, and the members do not all have the same function,

ALL:  so we, though many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another.

Songs of Praise:

Worthy of Worship (Terry York, 1988; tune Mark Blankenship, 1988 CCLI #82869)

Worthy of worship, worthy of praise, worthy of honor and glory;

Worthy of all the glad songs we can sing, worthy of all of the off’rings we bring,

Chorus:

You are worthy, Father, Creator,

You are worthy, Savior, Sustainer,

Your are worthy, worthy and wonderful, worthy of worship and praise.

Worthy of rev’rence, worthy of fear, worthy of love and devotion;

Worthy of bowing and bending of knees, worthy of all this and added to these…

(Chorus)

Almighty Father, Master and Lord, King of all kings and Redeemer,

Wonderful Counselor, Comforter, Friends, Savior and Source of our life without end,

(Chorus)

Everlasting God (Brenton Brown & Ken Riley, 2005  CCLI Song #4556538)

Strength will rise as we wait upon the Lord,

we will wait upon the Lord, we will wait upon the Lord.

Strength will rise as we wait upon the Lord,

we will wait upon the Lord, we will wait upon the Lord…

Our God, you reign forever,

Our Hope, our strong Deliverer!

You are the Everlasting God, the Everlasting God!

You do not faint, you won’t grow weary;

You’re the defender of the weak, you comfort those in need,

You lift us up on wings like eagles.

(Repeat all)

You are the Everlasting God, the Everlasting God!

You do not faint, you won’t grow weary;

You’re the defender of the weak, you comfort those in need,

You lift us up on wings like eagles.

What a Friend We Have in Jesus (Joseph Scriven, 1855; tune Charles Converse, 1868)

What a Friend we have in Jesus, all our sins and griefs to bear

What a privilege to carry everything to God in prayer

O what peace we often forfeit, O what needless pain we bear

All because we do not carry everything to God in prayer

Have we trials and temptations? Is there trouble anywhere?

We should never be discouraged: take it to the Lord in prayer

Can we find a friend so faithful, who will all our sorrows share?

Jesus knows our every weakness—take it to the Lord in prayer

Are we weak and heavy laden, cumbered with a load of care?

Precious Savior, still our refuge—take it to the Lord in prayer

Do thy friends despise, forsake thee? Take it to the Lord in prayer

In his arms he’ll take and shield thee; thou wilt find a solace there

What a Friend we have in Jesus, all our sins and griefs to bear

What a privilege to carry everything to God in prayer

Confession/Assurance    Romans 12:9-18

Let love be genuine. Abhor what is evil; hold fast to what is good.   Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor.   Do not be slothful in zeal, be fervent in spirit, serve the Lord.   Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer.   Contribute to the needs of the saints and seek to show hospitality.

Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse them.   Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep.   Live in harmony with one another. Do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly.   Never be wise in your own sight.   Repay no one evil for evil, but give thought to do what is honorable in the sight of all.   If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all.

Respond in Praise:

I Believe in Jesus (Marc Nelson, 1987  CCLI #61282)

I believe in Jesus, I believe He is the Son of God.

I believe He died and rose again, I believe He paid for us all.

And I believe that He’s here now, standing in our midst,

here with the power to heal now, and the grace to forgive.

I believe in Jesus, I believe He is the Son of God.

I believe He died and rose again, I believe He paid for us all.

And I believe that He’s here now, standing in our midst,

here with the power to heal now, and the grace to forgive.

I believe in You, Lord, I believe You are the Son of God

I believe You died and rose again, I believe You paid for us all.

And I believe that You’re here now, standing in our midst,

here with the power to heal now, and the grace to forgive,

here with the power to heal now, and the grace to forgive.

Scripture Reading:   1 Thessalonians 5:12-28

Final Instructions and Benediction

We ask you, brothers, to respect those who labor among you and are over you in the Lord and admonish you, and to esteem them very highly in love because of their work. Be at peace among yourselves.   And we urge you, brothers, admonish the idle,[a] encourage the fainthearted, help the weak, be patient with them all.   See that no one repays anyone evil for evil, but always seek to do good to one another and to everyone.   Rejoice always, pray without ceasing,  give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.   Do not quench the Spirit.   Do not despise prophecies,  but test everything; hold fast what is good.  Abstain from every form of evil.

Now may the God of peace himself sanctify you completely, and may your whole spirit and soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. He who calls you is faithful; he will surely do it.   Brothers, pray for us.  Greet all the brothers with a holy kiss.  I put you under oath before the Lord to have this letter read to all the brothers.  The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.

This is the Word of the Lord.   Thanks be to God!

Hymn of Dedication

Jesus Strong and Kind (Rich Thompson, Jonny Robinson, Michael Farren, Colin Buchanan; CCLI #7139992)

Jesus said that if I thirst
I should come to him
No one else can satisfy
I should come to him

Jesus said if I am weak
I should come to him
No one else can be my strength
I should come to him

Chorus:
For the Lord is good and faithful
He will keep us day and night
We can always run to Jesus
Jesus, strong and kind

Jesus said that if I fear
I should come to him
No one else can be my shield
I should come to him (Chorus)

Jesus said if I am lost
He will come to me
And he showed me on the cross
He will come to me (Chorus 2X)

Lord’s Prayer:

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.

Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors.

Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil:

for thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory.  Amen

Hymn of Thanksgiving

We Come, O Christ, to You (E. Margaret Clarkson, 1957, 1985; tune John Darwall, 1770  CCLI #3680735)

We come, O Christ, to you,

True Son of God and man,

By whom all things consist,

In whom all life began:

In you alone we live and move,

And have our being in your love.

You are the Way to God,

Your blood our ransom paid:

In you we face our Judge and Maker unafraid.

Before the throne absolved we stand,

Your love has met your law’s demand.

You are the living Truth!

All wisdom dwells in you,

The Source of every skill,

The one eternal True!

O great I Am! In you we rest,

Sure answer to our every quest.

You only are true Life,

To know you is to live

The more abundant life

That earth can never give:

O risen Lord! We live in you:

In us each day your life renew!

We worship you, Lord Christ,

Our Savior and our King,

To you our youth and strength

Adoringly we bring:

So fill our hearts, that all may view your life in us, and turn to you.

Benediction
