PROVIDENCE CHURCH

APRIL 16, 2023

Welcome

Passing of the Peace: Though we are separated by distance our hearts are one in Christ. The peace of Christ be with you!  And also with you!

Doxology

Praise God from whom all blessings flow,

Praise him all creatures here below,

Praise him above, ye heavenly host;

Praise Father, Son and Holy Ghost.

Amen

Call to Worship:   1 John 3:16-20

LEADER:  By this we know love, that he laid down his life for us, and we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers.

CONGREGATION:  But if anyone has the world’s goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him, how does God’s love abide in him?

LEADER:  Little children, let us not love in word or talk but in deed and in truth.

ALL:  By this we shall know that we are of the truth and reassure our heart before Him; for whenever our heart condemns us, God is greater than our heart, and He knows everything.

Songs of Praise:

All Hail the Power of Jesus’ Name (Edward Perronet, 1779; tune Oliver Holden, 1793)

All hail the power of Jesus’ name! Let angels prostrate fall;

Bring forth the royal diadem, and crown him Lord of all;

Bring forth the royal diadem, and crown him Lord of all.

Ye seed of Israel’s chosen race, ye ransomed of the fall,

Hail him who saves you by his grace, and crown him Lord of all;

Hail him who saves you by his grace, and crown him Lord of all.

Let every kindred, every tribe, on this terrestrial ball

To him all majesty ascribe, and crown him Lord of all;

To him all majesty ascribe, and crown him Lord of all.

O that with yonder sacred throng we at his feet may fall;

We’ll join the everlasting song, and crown him Lord of all;

We’ll join the everlasting song, and crown him Lord of all.

What a Beautiful Name (Brooke Ligertwood & Ben Fielding, 2017 CCLI #7068424)

You were the Word at the beginning, one with God the Lord Most High;

Your hidden glory in creation now revealed in you, our Christ—

What a beautiful name it is, what a beautiful name it is,

The name of Jesus Christ my King.

What a beautiful name it is, nothing compares to this,

what a beautiful name it is, the name of Jesus.

The world was lost in sin and darkness,

So Jesus you brought heaven down.

My sin was great—your love was greater;

What could separate us now?

What a wonderful name it is, what a wonderful name it is,

The name of Jesus Christ my King.

What a wonderful name it is, nothing compares to this,

What a wonderful name it is, the name of Jesus,

What a wonderful name it is, the name of Jesus…

…Death could not hold you, the veil tore before you,

You silence the boast of sin and grave.

The heavens are roaring the praise of your glory,

For you are raised to life again.

You have no rival, you have no equal,

Now and forever, God, you reign.

Yours is the kingdom, yours is the glory,

Yours is the name above all names!

What a powerful name it is, what a powerful name it is,

The name of Jesus Christ my King.

What a powerful name it is, nothing can stand against,

What a powerful name it is, the name of Jesus…

What a wonderful name it is, the name of Jesus,

What a beautiful name it is, the name of Jesus.

Confession/Assurance    1 Corinthians 13:1-13

If I speak in the tongues of men and angels, but have not love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to move mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. If I give away all I have, and if I deliver up my body to be burned, but have not love, I gain nothing.

     Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.

     Love never ends.  As for prophecies, they will pass away; as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will pass away. When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I gave up childish ways. For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I have been fully known. So now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love.

Respond in Praise:

I Will Sing of My Redeemer (Philip Bliss, 1876; tune James McGranahan)

I will sing of my Redeemer, and his wondrous love to me:

On the cruel cross he suffered from the curse to set me free.

Chorus:

Sing, O sing of my Redeemer!

With his blood he purchased me;

On the cross he sealed my pardon,

Paid the debt and made me free.

I will tell the wondrous story, how my lost estate to save,

In his boundless love and mercy, he the ransom freely gave. (Chorus)

I will sing of my Redeemer and his heavn’ly love to me;

He from death to life has brought me, Son of God, with him to be. (Chorus)

Scripture   John 13:34-35

34 “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. 35 By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”

This is the Word of the Lord.   Thanks be to God!

Hymn of Dedication

Wonderful, Merciful Savior (Eric Wyse & Dawn Rodgers, 1989  CCLI #106879)

Wonderful, merciful Savior, precious Redeemer and Friend,

Who would have thought that a Lamb could rescue the souls of men?

Oh you rescue the souls of men.

Counselor, Comforter, Keeper, Spirit we long to embrace,

You offer hope when our hearts have hopelessly lost our way,

Oh, we’ve hopelessly lost the way.

Chorus: You are the One that we praise,

You are the One we adore,

You give the healing and grace our hearts always hunger for,

Oh, our hearts always hunger for.

Almighty, Infinite Father, faithfully loving your own,

Here in our weakness you find us, falling before your Throne,

Oh we’re falling before your Throne. (Chorus 2X)

Lord’s Prayer:

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.

Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors.

Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil:

for thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory.  Amen

Hymn of Thanksgiving

It is Well With My Soul (Horatio Spafford, 1873; tune Philip Bliss, 1876)

When peace, like a river, attendeth my way,

When sorrows like sea billows roll;

Whatever my lot, thou hast taught me to say,

“It is well, it is well with my soul.”

Chorus:

It is well…

With my soul…

It is well, it is well with my soul.

2.Though Satan should buffet, though trials should come,

let this blest assurance control:

that Christ has regarded my helpless estate

and has shed his own blood for my soul. (Chorus)

3.My sin—O the bliss of this glorious thought!—

my sin, not in part, but the whole,

is nailed to the cross and I bear it no more;

Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, O my soul! (Chorus)

4.And Lord, haste the day when the faith shall be sight,

the clouds be rolled back as a scroll;

the trump shall resound and the Lord shall descend:

“Even so”—it is well with my soul. (Chorus)

Benediction
