Welcome

Passing of the Peace: Though we are separated by distance our hearts are one in Christ. The peace of Christ be with you!  And also with you!

Doxology

Praise God from whom all blessings flow,

Praise him all creatures here below,

Praise him above, ye heavenly host;

Praise Father, Son and Holy Ghost.

Amen

Call to Worship:   Psalm 118 (select verses)

Leader:  Oh give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; for his steadfast love endures forever!

Congregation:  Let Israel say,  “His steadfast love endures forever.”

Leader:  Let the house of Aaron say, “His steadfast love endures forever.”

Congregation:  Let those who fear the Lord say, “His steadfast love endures forever.”

Leader:  Out of my distress I called on the Lord; the Lord answered me and set me free. The Lord is on my side; I will not fear.  What can mere man do to me?

Congregation:  The Lord is my strength and my song; he has become my salvation. Glad songs of salvation are in the tents of the righteous:  “The right hand of the Lord does valiantly, the right hand of the Lord exalts, the right hand of the Lord does valiantly!”

Leader:  Open to me the gates of righteousness, that I may enter through them and give thanks to the Lord.

Congregation:  This is the gate of the Lord; the righteous shall enter through it.  I thank you that you have answered me and have become my salvation.

Leader:  The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone.  This is the Lord’s doing; it is marvelous in our eyes.

ALL:  This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.

Songs of Praise:

O for A Thousand Tongues to Sing (Charles Wesley, 1739; tune Carl Glaser)

O for a thousand tongues to sing my great Redeemer’s praise,

The glories of my God and King, the triumphs of his grace.

My gracious Master and my God, assist me to proclaim,

To spread through all the earth abroad the honors of thy name.

Jesus, the name that charms our fears, that bids our sorrows cease;

‘tis music in the sinner’s ears, ‘tis life and health and peace.

He breaks the power of reigning sin, he sets the pris’ner free;

His blood can make the foulest clean, his blood availed for me.

He speaks and, listening to his voice, new life the dead receive;

The mournful, broken hearts rejoice; the humble poor believe.

Hear him, ye deaf; his praise, ye dumb, your loosened tongues employ;

Ye blind, behold your Savior come; and leap, ye lame, for joy.

Shout to the North (Martin Smith, 1995  CCLI #1562261)

1.Men of faith, rise up and sing of the great and glorious King.

You are strong when you feel weak; in your brokenness, complete.

Chorus: Shout to the north and the south,

Sing to the east and the west.

Jesus is Savior to all,

Lord of heaven and earth.

2.Rise up, women of the truth; stand and sing to broken hearts.

Who can know the healing power of our awesome King of love? (Chorus)

We’ve been through fire, we’re been through rain,

We’ve been refined by the power of His name.

We’ve fallen deeper in love with You;

You’ve burned the truth on our lips! (Chorus)

3.Rise up, Church with broken wings; fill this place with songs again,

Of our God who reigns on high; by His grace again we’ll fly.

Shout to the north and the south,

Sing to the east and the west.

Jesus is Savior to all,

Lord of heaven and earth,

He is Lord of heaven and earth,

You are Lord of heaven and earth.

Jesus Paid It All (Elvina Hall, 1865; tune John Grape, 1868; Bridge, Kristian Stanfill)

1.I hear the Savior say, “Your strength indeed is small.

Child of weakness, watch and pray; find in Me your all in all.”

Jesus paid it all, all to him I owe;

Sin had left a crimson stain—he washed it white as snow.

2.Lord, now indeed I find your power and yours alone

Can change the leper’s spots, and melt the heart of stone. (Chorus)

Jesus paid it all, all to him I owe;

Sin had left a crimson stain—he washed it white as snow.

3.For nothing good have I whereby your grace to claim—

I’ll wash my garments white in the blood of Calvary’s Lamb.

Jesus paid it all, all to him I owe;

Sin had left a crimson stain—he washed it white as snow.

Oh praise the One who paid my debt, and raised this life up from the dead! (4X)

4.And when, before the Throne, I stand in him complete,

“Jesus died, my soul to save!” my lips shall still repeat.

Jesus paid it all, all to him I owe;

Sin had left a crimson stain—he washed it white as snow, he washed it white as snow,

He washed it white as snow!

Oh praise the One who paid my debt, and raised this life up from the dead! (4X)

Jesus paid it all, all to him I owe;

Sin had left a crimson stain—he washed it white as snow.

Confession/Assurance

Isaiah 53:4-7

Surely he has borne our griefs

and carried our sorrows;

yet we esteemed him stricken,

smitten by God, and afflicted.

He was pierced for our transgressions;

he was crushed for our iniquities;

upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace,

and by his wounds, we are healed.

All we like sheep have gone astray;

we have turned—every one—to his own way;

and the Lord has laid on him

the iniquity of us all.

Respond in Praise:

Savior, Like a Shepherd Lead Us (Dorothy Thrupp, 1836; tune William Bradbury, 1859)

Savior, like a shepherd lead us, much we need thy tender care;

In thy pleasant pastures feed us, for our use thy folds prepare:

Blessed Jesus, blessed Jesus, thou hast bought us, thine we are;

Blessed Jesus, blessed Jesus, thou hast bought us, thine we are.

Thou hast promised to receive us, poor and sinful though we be;

Thou hast mercy to relieve us, grace to cleanse, and pow’r to free:

Blessed Jesus, blessed Jesus, let us early turn to thee;

Blessed Jesus, blessed Jesus, let us early turn to thee.

We are thine; do thou befriend us, be the guardian of our way;

Keep thy flock, from sin defend us, seek us when we go astray:

Blessed Jesus, blessed Jesus, hear, O hear us when we pray;

Blessed Jesus, blessed Jesus, hear, O hear us when we pray.

Scripture Reading:    Matthew 18:5-14

5 “Whoever receives one such child in my name receives me, 6 but whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin,[a] it would be better for him to have a great millstone fastened around his neck and to be drowned in the depth of the sea.

Temptations to Sin

7 “Woe to the world for temptations to sin![b] For it is necessary that temptations come, but woe to the one by whom the temptation comes! 8 And if your hand or your foot causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to enter life crippled or lame than with two hands or two feet to be thrown into the eternal fire. 9 And if your eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away. It is better for you to enter life with one eye than with two eyes to be thrown into the hell[c] of fire.

The Parable of the Lost Sheep

10 “See that you do not despise one of these little ones. For I tell you that in heaven their angels always see the face of my Father who is in heaven.[d] 12 What do you think? If a man has a hundred sheep, and one of them has gone astray, does he not leave the ninety-nine on the mountains and go in search of the one that went astray? 13 And if he finds it, truly, I say to you, he rejoices over it more than over the ninety-nine that never went astray. 14 So it is not the will of my[e] Father who is in heaven that one of these little ones should perish.

This is the Word of the Lord.   Thanks be to God!

Sermon:   Tender Shepherd”

Hymn of Dedication

Wonderful, Merciful Savior (Eric Wyse & Dawn Rodgers, 1989  CCLI #106879)

Wonderful, merciful Savior, precious Redeemer and Friend,

Who would have thought that a Lamb could rescue the souls of men?

Oh you rescue the souls of men.

Counselor, Comforter, Keeper, Spirit we long to embrace,

You offer hope when our hearts have hopelessly lost our way,

Oh, we’ve hopelessly lost the way.

Chorus: You are the One that we praise,

You are the One we adore,

You give the healing and grace our hearts always hunger for,

Oh, our hearts always hunger for.

3.Almighty, Infinite Father, faithfully loving your own,

Here in our weakness you find us, falling before your Throne,

Oh we’re falling before your Throne. (Chorus 2X)

Lord’s Prayer:

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.

Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors.

Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil:

for thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory.  Amen

Hymn of Thanksgiving

For the Cause (Keith & Kristyn Getty, Stuart Townend, 2016  CCLI #7063750)

1.For the cause of Christ the King we give our lives, an offering,

‘Til all the earth resounds with ceaseless praise to the Son.

For the cause of Christ we go with joy to reap, with faith to sow,

As many see and many put their trust in the Son.

Chorus:

Christ we proclaim, the Name above every name:

For all Creation, every nation, God’s salvation through the Son!

2.For the King once lifted high to cries of rage, of “Crucify,”

Endured the cross, as every sin was liad on the Son.

To the King who conquered death to free the poor and the oppressed,

For lasting peace, for life and liberty in the Son. (Chorus)

3.Let it be my life’s refrain: To live is Christ, to die is gain,

Deny myself, take up my cross and follow the Son. (Repeat)

(Chorus)

Benediction
