PROVIDENCE CHURCH

May 16, 2021

Welcome

Passing of the Peace: Though we are separated by distance our hearts are one in Christ. The peace of Christ be with you!  And also with you!

Call to worship:   Psalm 18

Leader:  I love You, O LORD, YOU are my strength.

People:    The LORD is my rock, my fortress, and my deliverer.

Leader:     My God is my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.

People:    I will call upon the LORD, who is worthy to be praised; so shall I be saved from my enemies.

Leader:     In my distress I called upon the LORD; I cried to my God for help.

ALL:           From His temple, He heard my voice, and my cry for His help reached His ears.

Songs of Praise:

O Worship the King (Robert Grant, 1833, from Psalm 104; tune J.M. Haydn)

O worship the King all glorious above,

O gratefully sing his pow’r and his love;

Our shield and Defender, the Ancient of Days,

Pavilioned in splendor and girded with praise.

O tell of his might, O sing of his grace,

Whose robe is the light, whose canopy space.

His chariots of wrath the deep thunderclouds form,

And dark is his path on the wings of the storm.

Your bountiful care what tongue can recite?

It breathes in the air; it shines in the light;

It streams from the hills; it descends to the plain;

And sweetly distils in the dew and the rain.

Frail children of dust, and feeble as frail,

In you do we trust, nor find you to fail;

Your mercies how tender, how firm to the end,

Our Maker, Defender, Redeemer, and Friend!

Great is the Lord (Michael W. & Deborah Smith, 1982 CCLI #1149)

Great is the Lord, He is holy and just,

By his power we trust in his love.

Great is the Lord, He is faithful and true,

By his mercy He proves He is love.

Great is the Lord, and worthy of glory,

Great is the Lord, and worthy of praise!

Great is the Lord, now lift up your voice,

Now lift up your voice:

Great—is the Lord!

Great—is the Lord!

(Repeat all)

Great is the Lord, and worthy of glory,

Great is the Lord, and worthy of praise!

Great is the Lord, I lift up my voice,

I lift up my voice:

Great—is the Lord!

Great—is the Lord!

Jesus I am Resting, Resting (David Hampton, Jean Sophia Pigott CCLI #2697066)

Jesus, I am resting, resting, in the joy of what Thou art;

I am finding out the greatness of thy loving heart.

Thou hast bid me gaze upon thee, and thy beauty fills my soul,

For by thy transforming power, thou hast made me whole.

Chorus: Jesus, I am resting, resting, in the joy of what thou art.

I am finding out the greatness of thy loving heart.

O how great thy lovingkindness—vaster, broader than the sea;

O how marvelous thy goodness, lavished all on me!

Yes, I rest in thee, Beloved, know what wealth of grace is thine,

Know the certainty of promise, and have made it mine. (Chorus)

Simply trusting thee, Lord Jesus, I behold thee as thou art,

And thy love, so pure, so changeless, satisfies my heart,

Satisfies its deepest longings; meets, supplies its every need,

Compasseth me round with blessings: thine is love indeed! (Chorus)

Ever lift thy face upon me, as I work and wait for thee;

Resting in thy smile, Lord Jesus, earth’s dark shadows flee.

Brightness of y Father’s glory, sunshine of my Father’s face,

Keep me ever trusting, resting, fill me with thy grace.

Chorus: Jesus, I am resting, resting, in the joy of what thou art;

I am finding out the greatness of thy loving heart.

O Jesus, I am resting, resting, in the joy of what thou art;

I am finding out the greatness of thy loving heart.

Confession/Assurance

Respond in Praise:

Breathe on Me, Breath of God (Edwin Hatch CCLI #2647449)

Breathe on me, breath of God, fill me with life anew,

That I may love what thou dost love, and do what Thou wouldst do.

Breathe on me, breath of God, until my heart is pure,

Until my will is one with thine to do and to endure.

Breathe on me, breath of God, ‘til I am wholly thine,

Until this earthly part of me glows with thy fire divine.

Breathe on me, breath of God, So shall I never die,

But live with Thee the perfect life of thine eternity.

Scripture Reading:    Matthew 7:21-27

I Never Knew You

21 “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. 22 On that day many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?’ 23 And then will I declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.’

Build Your House on the Rock

24 “Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock. 26 And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. 27 And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell, and great was the fall of it.”

This is the Word of the Lord.   Thanks be to God!

Sermon:  “Sand or Rock”

Hymn of Dedication

My Stronghold (John Michael Talbot CCLI #14521)

1.Only in God is my soul at rest; in Him comes my salvation.

He only is my rock, my strength, and my salvation.

Chorus: My stronghold, my Savior!

I shall not be afraid at all.

My stronghold, my Savior!

I shall not be moved.

2.Only in God is found safety, when the enemy pursues me.

Only in God is found glory, when I am found meek and lowly. (Chorus)

  1. Only in God is my soul at rest; in Him comes my salvation.

He only is my rock, my strength, and my salvation. (Chorus X2)

Lord’s Prayer:

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.

Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors.

Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil:

for thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory.  Amen

Hymn of Thanksgiving:

A Mighty Fortress is Our God (Martin Luther, 1529)

A mighty fortress is our God, a bulwark never failing;

Our helper, he amid the flood of mortal ills prevailing.

For still our ancient foe doth seek to work us woe:

His craft and pow’r are great; and armed with cruel hate,

on earth is not his equal.

Did we in our own strength confide, our striving would be losing;

Were not the right man on our side, the man of God’s own choosing.

Dost ask who that may be? Christ Jesus, it is he,

Lord Sabaoth his name, from age to age the same,

And he must win the battle.

And though this world, with devils filled, should threaten to undo us,

We will not fear, for God hath willed his truth to triumph through us.

The prince of darkness grim, we tremble not for him;

His rage we can endure, for lo! his doom is sure;

One little word shall fell him.

That Word above all earthly pow’rs, no thanks to them, abideth;

The Spirit and the gifts are ours through him who with us sideth.

Let goods and kindred go, this mortal life also;

The body they may kill; God’s truth abideth still;

His kingdom is forever!

Benediction
