PROVIDENCE CHURCH

Welcome

Passing of the Peace: Though we are separated by distance our hearts are one in Christ. The peace of Christ be with you!  And also with you!

Call to worship:   Deut. 6:4-17 selected verses

Leader:  Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is One.

People:  You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.

Leader: These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts.

People:   Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.

Leader:  Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads.

People:  Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.

Leader:  When the Lord your God brings you into the land, be careful that you do not forget the Lord, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.

People:   Fear the Lord your God, serve him only. Do not put the Lord your God to the test.

ALL:     Be sure to keep the commands of the Lord your God and do what is right and good in the Lord’s sight, so that it may go well with you and you may go in and take over the good land the Lord promised you.

Songs of Praise                                                                                                                                     Come, Thou Almighty King (Anon., ca 1757; tune Felice de Giardini, 1769)

Come, thou Almighty King, help us thy name to sing,                                                                                                                           help us to praise.                                                                                                                                                                                          Father, all glorious, o’er all victorious,                                                                                                                                                     come and reign over us, Ancient of Days.

Come, thou Incarnate Word, gird on thy mighty sword,                                                                                                                      our prayer attend.                                                                                                                                                                                            Come, and thy people bless, and give thy Word success;                                                                                                                        Spirit of holiness, on us descend.

Come, Holy Comforter, thy sacred witness bear                                                                                                                                      in this glad hour.                                                                                                                                                                                        Thou who almighty art, now rule in every heart,                                                                                                                                and ne’er from us depart, Spirit of power.

To the great One in Three eternal praises be,                                                                                                                                          hence evermore.                                                                                                                                                                                              His sovereign majesty may we in glory see,                                                                                                                                           and to eternity love and adore.

Lord, I Lift Your Name on High (Rick Founds, 1989)

Lord, I lift your name on high

Lord, I love to sing your praises

I’m so glad you’re in my life

I’m so glad you came to save us

You came from heaven to earth, to show the way

From the earth to the cross, my debt to pay

From the cross to the grave, from the grave to the sky,

Lord I lift your name on high (Repeat all)

You came from heaven to earth, to show the way

From the earth to the cross, my debt to pay

From the cross to the grave, from the grave to the sky,

Lord I lift your name on high,

Lord I lift your name on high,

Lord I lift your name on high!

Jesus Strong and Kind (Rich Thompson, Jonny Robinson, Michael Farren, Colin Buchanan; CCLI #7139992)

Jesus said that if I thirst

I should come to him;

No one else can satisfy,

I should come to him.

Jesus said if I am weak

I should come to him;

No one else can be my strength,

I should come to him.

Chorus:

For the Lord is good and faithful,

He will keep us day and night.

We can always run to Jesus,

Jesus, strong and kind.

Jesus said that if I fear

I should come to him;

No one else can be my shield,

I should come to him. (Chorus)

Jesus said if I am lost

He will come to me.

And he showed me on the cross:

He will come to me. (Chorus 2X)

Confession/Assurance

Respond in Praise

 There is A Fountain (William Cowper, 1771; tune Lowell Mason, 1838)

There is a fountain filled with blood, drawn from Immanuel’s veins;

And sinners, plunged beneath that flood, lose all their guilty stains:

Lose all their guilty stains, lose all their guilty stains,

And sinners, plunged beneath that flood, lose all their guilty stains.

The dying thief rejoiced to see that fountain in his day;

And there have I, as vile as he, washed all my sins away:

Washed all my sins away, washed all my sins away;

And there have I, as vile as he, washed all my sins away.

Dear dying Lamb, your precious blood shall never lose its pow’r,

Till all the ransomed church of God be saved to sin no more:

Be saved to sin no more, be saved to sin no more,

Till all the ransomed church of God be saved to sin no more.

Ever since by faith I saw the stream your flowing wounds supply,

Redeeming love has been my theme, and shall be till I die:

And shall be till I die, and shall be till I die,

Redeeming love has been my theme, and shall be till I die.

Scripture Reading:    Matthew 4:1-11

The Temptation of Jesus

Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. 2 And after fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. 3 And the tempter came and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread.” 4 But he answered, “It is written,

“‘Man shall not live by bread alone,

but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”

5 Then the devil took him to the holy city and set him on the pinnacle of the temple 6 and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down, for it is written,

“‘He will command his angels concerning you,’

and

“‘On their hands they will bear you up,

lest you strike your foot against a stone.’”

7 Jesus said to him, “Again it is written, ‘You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.’” 8 Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. 9 And he said to him, “All these I will give you, if you will fall down and worship me.” 10 Then Jesus said to him, “Be gone, Satan! For it is written,

“‘You shall worship the Lord your God

and him only shall you serve.’”

11 Then the devil left him, and behold, angels came and were ministering to him.

This is the Word of the Lord.   Thanks be to God!

Sermon: Jesus our Victor

Hymn of Dedication:

Change My Heart, O God (Eddie Espinosa, 1995 CCLI #1565)

Change my heart, O God,

Make it ever true,

Change my heart, O God,

May I be like You.

You are the Potter, I am the clay;

Mold me and make me, this is what I pray.

Change my heart, O God,

Make it ever true,

Change my heart, O God,

May I be like You.

You are the Potter, I am the clay;

Mold me and make me, this is what I pray.

Change my heart, O God,

Make it ever true,

Change my heart, O God,

May I be like You.

Lord’s Prayer:

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.

Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors.

Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil:

for thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory.  Amen

Hymn of Thanksgiving:

Jesus, What a Friend for Sinners (Charles Wesley, 1744; tune Rowland Pritchard, 1855)

Jesus, what a friend for sinners! Jesus! Lover of my soul;

Friends may fail me, foes assail me, He, my Savior, makes me whole.

Chorus:
Hallelujah! What a Savior! Hallelujah, what a friend!

Saving, helping, keeping, loving, He is with me to the end.

Jesus! What a strength in weakness! Let me hide myself in him;

Tempted, tried, and sometimes failing, he, my strength, my vict’ry wins.

(Chorus)

Jesus! What a help in sorrow! While the billows o’er me roll,

Even when my heart is breaking, he, my comfort, helps my soul. (Chorus)

Jesus! What a guide and keeper! While the tempest still is high,

Storms about me, night o’ertakes me, he, my pilot hears my cry. (Chorus)

Jesus! I do now receive him, more than all in him I find;

He hath granted me forgiveness, I am his, and he is mine. (Chorus)

Benediction
