PROVIDENCE CHURCH

Welcome

Passing of the Peace: Though we are separated by distance our hearts are one in Christ. The peace of Christ be with you!  And also with you!

Call to worship:   Exodus 15:11-18 selected verses

Leader:  11 Who is like unto thee, O Lord, among the gods? who is like thee, glorious in holiness, fearful in praises, doing wonders?

People:  12 Thou stretchedst out thy right hand, the earth swallowed them.

Leader:  13 Thou in thy mercy hast led forth the people which thou hast redeemed: thou hast guided them in thy strength unto thy holy habitation.

People:  14 The people shall hear, and be afraid:  trembling shall take hold upon them; all the inhabitants of Canaan shall melt away.

Leader:  16 Fear and dread shall fall upon them; by the greatness of thine arm they shall be as still as a stone; till thy people pass over, O Lord, till the people pass over, which thou hast purchased.

People:  17 Thou shalt bring them in, and plant them in the mountain of thine inheritance, in the place, O Lord, which thou hast made for thee to dwell in, in the Sanctuary, O Lord, which thy hands have established.

All:         18 The Lord shall reign for ever and ever.

Songs of Praise

Shout to the Lord (Darlene Zschech, 1993 CCLI #1406918)

My Jesus, my Savior
Lord, there is none like You.
All of my days I want to praise
the wonders of Your mighty love

My comfort, my shelter,
tower of refuge and strength,
let every breath, all that I am
never cease to worship You!

Chorus:

Shout to the Lord, all the earth, let us sing:
power and majesty, praise to the King.
Mountains bow down and the seas will roar
at the sound of Your name!

I sing for joy at the work of Your hands;
forever I’ll love You, forever I’ll stand.
Nothing compares to the promise I have in You. (Repeat all)

You Are My Hiding Place (Michael Ledner, 1981  CCLI #21442)

You are my hiding place, You always fill my heart with songs of deliverance;

Whenever I am afraid, I will trust in You,

I will trust in You.

Let the weak say, “I am strong in the strength of the Lord!”( Women: I will trust in You…)

Men: You are my hiding place,                        Women: I will trust in You.

You always fill my heart with songs              Let the weak say, “I am strong

Of deliverance; Whenever I am afraid,         in the strength of the Lord.”

I will trust in You, I will trust in You.            You are my hiding place,

Let the weak say, “I am strong                         You always fill my heart

In the strength of the Lord!”                            with songs of deliverance, whenever I am afraid,

I will trust in You…

(Repeat parts, everyone ending with “I will trust in You!”)

Respond in Praise

Nothing But the Blood of Jesus (Robert Lowry, 1876)

What can wash away my sin? Nothing but the blood of Jesus.

What can make me whole again? Nothing but the blood of Jesus.

Chorus: O precious is the flow that makes me white as snow;

No other fount I know, nothing but the blood of Jesus.

Nothing can for sin atone—nothing but the blood of Jesus;

naught of good that I have done—nothing but the blood of Jesus. (Chorus)

This is all my hope and peace—nothing but the blood of Jesus;

this is all my righteousness—nothing but the blood of Jesus. (Chorus 2X)

Scripture Reading:    Matthew 4:12-25

Jesus Begins His Ministry

12 Now when he heard that John had been arrested, he withdrew into Galilee. 13 And leaving Nazareth he went and lived in Capernaum by the sea, in the territory of Zebulun and Naphtali, 14 so that what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled:

15 “The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali,
the way of the sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles—
16 the people dwelling in darkness
have seen a great light,
and for those dwelling in the region and shadow of death,
on them a light has dawned.”

17 From that time Jesus began to preach, saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”[a]

Jesus Calls the First Disciples

18 While walking by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon (who is called Peter) and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen. 19 And he said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.”[b] 20 Immediately they left their nets and followed him. 21 And going on from there he saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee and John his brother, in the boat with Zebedee their father, mending their nets, and he called them. 22 Immediately they left the boat and their father and followed him.

Jesus Ministers to Great Crowds

23 And he went throughout all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom and healing every disease and every affliction among the people. 24 So his fame spread throughout all Syria, and they brought him all the sick, those afflicted with various diseases and pains, those oppressed by demons, those having seizures, and paralytics, and he healed them. 25 And great crowds followed him from Galilee and the Decapolis, and from Jerusalem and Judea, and from beyond the Jordan.

This is the Word of the Lord.   Thanks be to God!

Sermon: “Jesus Calls”

 Hymn of Dedication

Jesus Strong and Kind (Rich Thompson, Jonny Robinson, Michael Farren, Colin Buchanan; CCLI #7139992)

Jesus said that if I thirst

I should come to him;

No one else can satisfy,

I should come to him.

Jesus said if I am weak

I should come to him;

No one else can be my strength,

I should come to him.

Chorus:

For the Lord is good and faithful,

He will keep us day and night.

We can always run to Jesus,

Jesus, strong and kind.

Jesus said that if I fear

I should come to him;

No one else can be my shield,

I should come to him.

(Chorus)

Jesus said if I am lost

He will come to me.

And he showed me on the cross:

He will come to me. (Chorus 2X)

Lord’s Prayer:

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.

Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors.

Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil:

for thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory.  Amen

Hymn of Thanksgiving:

Blessed Assurance (Fanny Crosby, 1873; tune Phoebe Knapp, 1873)

1.Blessed Assurance, Jesus is mine!

O what a foretaste of glory divine!

Heir of salvation, purchase of God,

Born of his Spirit, washed in his blood.

Chorus:

This is my story, this is my song, praising my Savior all the day long;

This is my story, this is my song, praising my Savior all the day long.

2.Perfect submission, perfect delight,

visions of rapture now burst on my sight;

Angels descending, bring from above

Echoes of mercy, whispers of love. (Chorus)

3.Perfect submission, all is at rest,

I in my Savior am happy and blest;

Watching and waiting, looking above,

Filled with his goodness, lost in his love. (Chorus 2X)

Benediction
